The Respiratory Medicine Service comprises the general respiratory outpatient clinic, the inpatient consultation service, the pulmonary laboratory function with exercise testing, the flexible bronchoscopy and polysomnography services. Lung disease in children is the most common reason for admission to hospital and lung problems complicate many other illnesses in children. There are over 1500 visits to the outpatient clinic each year. The pulmonary function laboratory is accredited as a category 3A lab by the BC Diagnostic Accreditation Program and performs detailed pulmonary function and exercise testing on children with respiratory symptoms. Flexible bronchoscopies are performed on inpatients and as day care procedures. The polysomnography service performs diagnostic overnight sleep studies on children, particularly those with suspected sleep disordered breathing. There is close liaison with pediatric critical care as both Respirologists have cross appointments with this Division.
